Jay Gould was an active participant in the railway companies during the 1880s. The traction company Withdrew the night cars running on the Richmond, Columbia Avenue, Seventeenth and Nineteenth Streets, and Chestnut and Walnut Streets branches. Following the end of the World War I, traditional rail could no longer handle the increases in commuters working in Downtown Boston.
